| Saturday 8th July fab five meet at Lea Green 8am, packed up the Pope mobil and set off for Fort William at 9am.
Stopped for a hearty breakfast at Westmoreland Services on the M6, please note this!!
Arrived Fort William at 3.30pm, light drizzle but warm. Jon & Joe set off at 3.45pm. As we got further up the mists descended and the drizzle became more persistent. By the time we got to the top we had about 30m visibility, cold and wet but we made good time and got back to the car park at 8.30pm, 4 ¾ hours not bad!
Some dry clothes and into the car by 9pm and set off for Wasdale and Scafell. Our support team delighted in telling us of their nice pub meals of steak & ale pie, etc. Richard had brought a good pub guide to ensure their well being. Suddenly occurs to Joe & Jon that the hole in the middle of their body was an empty stomach having had nothing but a couple of Mars bars and a cup a soup since ten o'clock yesterday morning. At 1am Sunday morning pulled into service on M6 for a toasted sandwich and a hot drink. Driving pretty grim thru constant rain and wind.
Arrived at Wasdale 2.45am, weather awful, wet, cold and windy. Decided to wait for a bit of light and Mike, Jon & Joe set off at 4am. Mike, who had not been feeling too well, parted company with the contents of his stomach, after some "persuasion" he headed back to the car to scare the hell out of our two sleeping beauties. About 2 hours to the top, as it was blowing a gale, low cloud for about the last 30 mins. of climb and persistent rain we didn't stay long. Got back to car pack at 7.45am. Another change of clothes, into car and set off for Snowdon.
Another long drive for the drivers, arrived at Llanberris at 1.30pm Sunday afternoon, guess what? it is still raining! Two hours to the top and it is blowing a gale, they have stopped the train and closed the café due to conditions. Had to hang onto the stone pillar to stop us getting blown off. Arrived back at car park at 5.30pm rather tired, wet and cold. We did it slightly over the 24 hour target but given the poor conditions very pleased with our endeavours. Back to the pub/hotel for a hot bath and some food, plan was to eat & watch world cup final, none of us made it to the full time whistle, all in bed by 9 o'clock fast asleep!!
So it is now time to collect the money, over to you Neil, and we will arrange to meet up with Laurels parent, Lawrence & Mereta to present the cheque for over £2,000. Lawrence & Mereta called us on several occasion to wish us luck and thank us for our efforts.
So next year and the 24 hours, volunteers please, never to early to start planning.
